Fair thoughts, it's all abou my which proportion off drivers we can target. Same as any asset in the world really, much cheaper to buy than rent. Has always been the case with cars, fridges from radio rentals etc. hasn't stopped hertz or radio rentals making good money out of it.

The people who have the money upfront would likely buy, assuming they are committed to career change.

Renting a car for a couple of months gives a potential new uber driver chance to try the role, and easy exit without ownership or obligation if they change their mind after a few weeks.

This will always only be a portion of drivers, but if 5% of 60000 drivers rent that's 3000 cars we can target, and we are by far the cheapest option on uber.
