When it comes to extraction cost are several degrees cheaper int he US because of the extensive pipeline network existing there already.
When it comes to gas in particular, Aus relies on long-term contracts whereas US has a spot market. Typically contracts in Aus are for A$3/mcf MAX, spot prices in the US has been as high as A$20/mcf over the past 2 years, but will typically average A$10/mcf going forward.
Note that 3 times the price does not equal 3 times the profit. Once you factor in costs the profit margin can be as much as 10 times better in the US. Hence why you don't need to find as much there for the market to be happy.
