a quick google and I found:

And they disallowed magnesium alloy vehicles in Formula 1 cars, after Joe Schlesser's fatal crash, where the firemen tried to put out a magnesium fire with WATER --- it just added oxygen to the fire!
probably something you don't want on an airplane.
as for the announcement I took that as positive, they are hiring on the right people to do the right job, obviously they feel the purity level is more than possible to achieve or one would reasonably assume they would have held off on the hiring process until well into Q1 2016.
