PUTRAJAYA - Lynas can continue to operate in Malaysia if it meets all safety requirements and natural cleanliness set.The company, however, must remove any waste from this country. The Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change, Yeo Bee Yin said the government was firm in the matter of waste and the only thing the government could tolerate was Lynas's documentation of waste remittance.(She) explained that the situation meant the government would assist Lynas to get all the necessary approvals to send residues from Malaysia."If Lynas is able to meet the requirements set and its presence does not cause people's discomfort, then Lynas as well as other foreign investors may continue to be in Malaysia," Bee Yin told Sinchew Daily.Commenting further, Bee Yin said Lynas had sent a letter of appeal on the terms of delivery of waste, but the government did not intend to change the decision made on the matter.(Sh)e added that a committee would be set up to ensure that Lynas was able to send out all the rest within nine months."Many documents are required to allow waste to be delivered to Australia. The challenge now is whether all the documents are available within nine months."On the question of whether Australia is prepared to accept Malaysia's rejected waste, this is Lynas and Australia's affairs," (she) said.According to (her), Lynas's unwillingness to cooperate with the government will only tackle bilateral ties.In a different issue, Bee Yin said the Climate Change Center was set up this year to analyze the long-term data and impact of climate change on Malaysia."This year's focus is the implication of rising sea levels due to climate change on land area and how infrastructural facilities should be improved to cope with what might happen."We have to look at this from now on, for example, many power station stations are located in the coastal area at this time," (she) said.
