Jan, 2.25% interest in the US is not that low. Money was been pumped into the economy on a scale never seen before. Bank deposits are around 0.1 to 0.3%. I would think that Mt K can borrow for about 2% without a problem. and if they had surplus cash then many times better than leaving it on deposit.
Opportunity cost. IMO very little as there is so much $ to be had if your credit rating is good in the US over the past few years.
Secondly Mt K have probably made more than their original stake by shorting the hell out of the stock.
If REE prices rocket along with the SP then they convert and make $. If they can force a lower conversion price (this is what they are skilled at) then they can end up owning a large % of the company.
LYC investment probably owes them very little at this stage. The only reason I can see Mt K initiating discussions with LYC are if they feel the breakup value of LYC is less than $400m.
