I can see where your coming from j but I think you may be equating "heat content anomaly" with temperature. Here's a graph showing a typical temperature profile with depth (among other things).
Change in heat content as you may be aware, is calculated from the change in temperature. On overall warming ocean can retain a temperature profile which cools with depth.
