How about the $100 million battery which won't run the grid for even an hour?
Was gob smacked when Alinta demolished the Port Augusta power station with explosives. The coal mine was also "rehabilitated".
They made sure the assets were completely trashed and could never be used again to generate cheap electricity for the ETSA grid.
On Friday 9th, just gone, the NSW Tomago aluminium smelter pot lines shut because of a lack of electricity.
The shortfall would normally be made up by Victoria, but Vic electricity was also in short supply and had to go to ETSA to maintain SA supply.
Victoria has less room to manoeuvre because of the closure of Hazelwood power station (and then its destruction).
The problem is that winter peak usage is at dawn breakfast and sunset - just the very times there is NO solar input, and very often also close to zero wind input.
Disgracefully, precious gas is wasted generating electricity to keep the lights on.
Liddell will close, and other coal stations are being starved of maintenance, because the grid managed by AEMCO is contorted to favour renewables.
This makes coal uneconomic because you can't start and stop 400mw base load power generators like turning on the porch light.
Steam has to be vented to atmosphere - blowing dollars up in steam.
You're right Cowcockie about SA leading in the ripoff stakes; but Victoria is second and NSW is making a bid for third.
We are being ripped for electricity now.
As generation gobbles gas supply, gas is the next shortage.
Politicians are already blaming exports to cover their incompetence.
Interesting they stopped pipes at Karratha, James Price Point and a facility further north to enhance Aboriginal culture.
Woodside said if we can't sell it in Australia, we'll sell it overseas.
The gas plant at northwest shelf is amazing - a shining stainless steel monster covering acres - looking like something from outer space.

There is no big explanation that coal is being killed
IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY
Energy supply companies throughout the world know that governments will GIVE them any money they want and that the cost of the power generated is uncontrolled IE they can charge whatever they want, enabling bigger profits
