Or they have hypothesised it by building models that rely on heuristically-based assumptions?
Because I'd love to know how one goes about proving a long-duration physical phenomenon that is one element of a non-linear, chaotic and open system which has an indeterminate number and scope of independent variables, some of which may represent self-moderating mechanisms.
