@nippy; my wife and I have often considered that option but when you're born into poverty and low incomes taking risks such as not insuring major assets is pretty challenging.
Indeed, you point about investing the cost of premiums elsewhere is valid - if you've some kind of 'iron dome' to protect you!
Therein lies the problem for Aussie Battlers of my generation - there never was an 'iron dome' we could shelter under.
