Climate change scepticism is motivated by fear, reinforced by greed and defended through shame.
As individuals I doubt many would have taken this path but combined it must seem real and make it the easy way out rather than facing up to the fact that we are destroying most of the life on the planet.
Not dissimilar to the motivation behind creationism and probably most religions, to provide an excuse for behaviour that is to the detriment of most[all?] other life because we are 'superior beings'.
