Record drought followed by record wet is not incompatible with climate change.
Climate change is buried deep inside the weather systems. The problem is trying to explain to the general public an abstract concept that is buried behind seasonal and cyclical data noise. I agree, a lot of these Chicken Littles should just shut up. They get media attention in the short-term but when their worse-case scenario predictions don't happen, the general public because jaded or just stop listening. Meanwhile, the CO2 level keeps rising. Is that rise a good thing or a bad thing? Who cares, because the public has stopped listening.
