Climate change (if AGW is real) and/or resource scarcity (if AGW is a false alarm) makes war a real possibility.
They limit, absolutely, the chance that China can get themselves closer to OUR standard of living and the US's firepower eliminate any chance that they will volunteer to reduce their standard of living to that of the third world.
