Maybe just me being over-sensitive on someone else's behalf, but you wouldn't be the first to 'joke' about someone's (imo bravely) shared experience of being in or emerging from hospital treatment. I have no idea of the motivation behind these comments, but they run the risk of being interpreted wrongly by both the 'target' and observers - and are easily seen as faux concern, designed to belittle rather than empathise.
Maybe, rather than suggesting a recovering person get some rest or whatever, just give the hospital commentary itself a complete rest?
