    I don't think Palmer United Party will do too much damage in the senate, they would be more aligned with LNP than ALP or Greens I would think.

    The senate has proportional representation based on the whole state as one electorate, so you're always going to get instances when smaller parties may hold the so-called balance of power.

    If however legislation is truly in the national interest, then the 2 major parties could always ensure it passes the senate by voting together.

    They do it for pay rises for themselves, so why can't they do it more often to respect the broad will of the people?

    Because there is no doubt that there was a very strong mandate from the Australian people to get rid of the Carbon Tax and Mining Tax.
