I must confess I was asking the same question about C3/C4 coals and decided that the best approach was to get the information from the Mongolian (Przewalski) horse's mouth.

My understanding is that the C3/C4 reference originated from an ASX requirement and is only relevant to the visual identification of coal qualities (From cores in our case).

This data will be superseded by data to be released shortly which will make the visual properties irrelevant IE:

Gas Content from desorbed cores.
Permeability from down hole testing
