Hairyback, according to Malcolm Turnbull's brilliantly-articulated speech, the gap is much less than it was for some indicators but as wide as ever for others; most notably life expectancy and incarceration rates.
Turnbull's ground-breaking speech spelled out a massive change of approach and emphasis from John Howard's military intervention into Aboriginal communities that did things TO Aborigines instead of doing things WITH Aborigines.
IMO that change is of historical importance and the manner in which Turnbull tied it into constitutional change was statesman-like.
The new Turnbull line also described a huge departure from Tony Abbott's cuts-cuts-cuts and do as I say and right now approach that did awful things to Aborigines and the way they're perceived - the worst of which was probably his appalling 'lifestyle choices' reference to remote Aboriginal communities he sought to have closed altogether.
