Anti-Lynas activists call for resignation of 4 Malaysian ministers

KUALA LUMPUR: Anti-Lynas activists have called for the resignation of four Malaysian ministers, whom they accuse of misleading the public.

The ministers oversee a controversial rare earths refinery belonging Australian miner Lynas.

The four issued a joint statement earlier this week saying Lynas could have its licence revoked if it did not export potentially harmful waste by-products out of Malaysia.

The Australian miner however argued that there was no basis to kick them out of the country as moving waste out of Malaysia was never part of the deal.

Its CEO Nick Curtis said the company has merely undertaken to remove the waste voluntarily.

He added that should their proposal for a permanent waste disposal site be rejected by the Malaysian government, there would be no taker for its recycled products.

A group of activists representing some 80 non-governmental organisations in Malaysia urged the Minister of International Trade and Industry to cancel, if not suspend, the temporary operating licence of Lynas on Thursday.

Their request was rejected, though a memorandum was submitted to the minister.

Anti-Lynas activists say they are afraid the Australian miner will eventually turn Kuantan into their dumping ground for toxic and radioactive waste.

With a crucial general election approaching, the issue has been seized by Malaysian opposition who have promised to scrap the US$800 million plant if they are voted into power.

Lynas' CEO has also complained that the plant is being used as a political football.
