I don't know what the shorters have to do with it, but as an options trader I know that as well as buying Puts you can also buy Calls - it is not just a one way street with options. I don't do options in Oz, do mine in US, but do know that the volatility that is created by algo/bots (in certain stocks and instruments) is making life very difficult for options traders, not that it was easy to begin with.

And yes, todays' recovery was almost as amazing as yesterdays rise, we haven't seen many consecutive green days for a while - but I would say that it was definitely a volatile day.
