the sampling interval or resolution of RC drilling is one metre. The drillers collect the sample in green plastic bags from an air cyclone separator, or sometimes in buckets that are tipped into individual piles on the ground. aircore is a smaller scale RC drilling method. Instead of using a percussion hammer, a cutting bit is used to cut and smash its way through the ground. It is typically used as a reconnaissance method where the ground is soft or weathered enough to allow it and is considerably cheaper than full sized RC drilling. Aircore rigs can also use percussion hammers if the ground is harder, functioning just like a “real” RC rig but with much smaller sample size and limits to the depth of drilling.

A full sized RC rig will be powered by the rig engine, the rig compressor and a support truck with auxiliary and booster compressors. It is not unusual for the bigger RC rigs to consume around 2000L of diesel per shift. The air capacity of such rigs is 2200cfm/1100psi. They are loud and dusty.
