The CNBC Fast Money program discusses the effect of algorithmic trading on the dow yesterday at about the 12 minute mark in the video. They also discuss the reality of the liquidity argument provided by the algo players and how during times of extreme volatility that liquidity dries up when it is most needed.
Yesterday they discussed how many big insto traders in the US were getting a bit tired of algo trading due to the extreme move yesterday exacerbated by the algo's hitting all their stops and losing the insto's a fair bit of dough. Clearly once the big boys start getting hurt by it there will be a stronger backlash, anyway interesting to see the experts discussing it so openly.
