The post-debate coverage team for CNN ripped Joe Biden for his performance during the last showdown between Democrats before the 2020 Iowa caucuses.

Biden, 77, faced off against six of his fellow 2020 Democrats in the CNN/Des Moines Register debate on Tuesday night but was criticized by the panel for a dull performance.

Commentator David Axelrod, who worked in the Obama administration as a senior adviser to the president, questioned Biden’s energy levels, saying, “His closing was very strong, but you wonder where that energy is throughout the debate. There were times when he seemed, very much, low energy.”

CNN reporter Nia-Malika Henderson agreed, saying, “I thought Biden had a terrible debate. This is the moment where he has come into this debate saying that he is the one who can take on Donald Trump, that he is steady and strong. He seemed none of those things in that debate, certainly the whole way through.”

She added, “His closing statement was good, but many people who were watching this debate may not have watched it all the way through to see his strongest moments.”

The former vice president has been the nationwide front-runner since his announcement in 2018. He has struggled to connect to voters in Iowa and slipped to fourth place in a poll last week, with Bernie Sanders taking the lead. However, he was back on top in the state just days later.

Tuesday's event was the final debate before the Iowa caucuses, which take place on Feb. 3.
