    Latrobe's new economy includes coal
    Sarah Scopelianos | July 11, 2012

BROWN coal will play a role in the Latrobe Valley's future despite the world moving towards a cleaner existence.
The Victorian Government's Latrobe Valley Roadmap, which includes funding for projects and job creation, was released today.

Victorian Acting Premier Peter Ryan said the plan was looking at business opportunities and making the region an attractive place to live in a low carbon economy.

Cash, including an increase of $5 million to make the Latrobe Valley Industry and Infrastructure Fund a $15 million pool to support businesses was announced today.

Other funding will be injected into a Gippsland aviation and tourism plans.

Latrobe City Mayor Ed Vermeulen said the roadmap was the government's response to the Latrobe Valley Transition Committee's report.

"The big things have been catered for. There's a top-up of $5 million (to the Latrobe Valley Industry and Infrastructure Fund) and important issues for Latrobe and Gippsland including the logistics site and the Lurgi site, which is an old gas plant . . . are being considered," Cr Vermeulen said.

In the report, the government says it will work with Latrobe City Council and the private sector to find a terminal operator to run the proposed freight facility which would give customers access to bulk and container rail services.

The Lurgi site, which has been cleaned, is earmarked for development in a bid to generate jobs.

The report also states brown coal will continue to provide the state's base load electricity generation for the foreseeable future.

"If the technological challenges, primarily around removal of water, and managing the coal's high reactivity can be met, it is the Victorian Government's view that brown coal can continue to play a very significant role in the Latrobe Valley economy," the report states.

Cr Vermeulen said there was no way the region could ignore its brown coal resource.

There's 33 billion tonnes of brown coal as a potential economic resource with 13 billion tonnes unallocated.

"There's no way to ignore the brown coal resource. It is about doing something to reduce moisture in the coal and having near zero emissions in use and export.

"It's only a stage (the report) – it's an ongoing need to change, an ongoing need to expand our economic base and to diversify," he said.
