    I'm sure the retired power station worker is proud of his achievements but that does not stop him being wrong.

    For instance number 1.

    He confuses boiler efficiency with power station efficiency and so misinforms. The boilers may indeed be able to capture more than 90% of the heat from burning coal but the turbines do not turn all of that heat into electricity. The Laws of Thermodynamics limit the efficiency of these turbines to typically 30 something percent. That leaves 60 something percent to be dissipated via cooling towers. Coal fired power stations need both smokestacks for the combustion products and cooling towers for "wasted" heat from the turbines.
