The CFCL example where they compare 2 homes, one with solar and one with Bluegen, and ask which one provides the most CO2 savings, is bit misleading because it is somewhat idealised. It reality it says:
If you were given a solar unit or a Bluegen and you live in a state that relies on a dirty and inefficent fuel source that is far from the main area of electricity consumption and the solar unit uses currently available panels and the Bluegen is idealised (60% efficient always no problems!), which choice would save the most CO2? The Bluegen of course.
However, we a not given the units but make our choice based on initial and maintenance costs not just CO2 savings, most power stations in Europe don't use brown coal, solar in 2 years will not look anything like installed solar of today (in performance and technology)but fuel cells will be basically be the same (excluding next gen fuel cell like Bloom, etc) but with better performance characteristics that still degrade significanlty over time.
The value proposition in Victoria is not the same as in Europe. For instance in Germany, where the increasing numbers of super insulated homes make mchp attractive.
