Birdman29, UNCTAD has indeed produced a useful report on strategic battery raw materials.

the attention in the report on some negative social and environmental impacts from battery metals production should be welcomed. It draws the attention of the extractive industries and nations involved to these problems, hopefully so they can address these issues and take steps to moderate them.

any issues arising from a concentration of battery metals ore reserves and production in only a handful of countries is already being addressed by miners diversifying supply sources.

The sharp boost in demand for these metals could help power economic growth in countries where they are mined and even more so by adding value to the product in country.

the problems in the UNCTAD report can be addressed and shouldn't be used as an excuse to maintain the status quo of what is now obviously a dangerous reliance on all fossil fuels.

UNCTAD says Rechargeable batteries will play a significant role in the global transition to a low-carbon energy system and help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions if the raw materials used in their manufacture are sourced and produced in a sustainable manner.

The global market for cathode for lithium ion battery, the most common rechargeable car battery, was estimated at US$7 billion in 2018 and is expected to reach $58.8 billion by 2024, according to the report, which is available at unctad.org.

Australia is already well positioned to meet some of this increased demand.

"Alternative sources of energy such as electric batteries will become even more important as investors grow more wary of the future of the oil industry," UNCTAD's director of international trade, Pamela Coke-Hamilton, said while launching the report.

"The rise in demand for the strategic raw materials used to manufacture electric car batteries will open more trade opportunities for the countries that supply these materials. It's important for these countries to develop their capacity to move up the value chain," she said.
