Coal production in Mozambique set to rise by 1,000 pct this year [ 2011-03-08 ]

Maputo, Mozambique, 8 March ? Growth in coal production this year in Mozambique is expected to see growth of over 1,000 percent, according to the economic and social plan of the Mozambican government.

The expected growth is considered to be the biggest seen in the last few years and will be due to international companies becoming involved in coal mining, mainly in Tete province, including Brazil?s Vale and Australia?s Riversdale Mining.

Production for this year is estimated at 2 million tons, 750,000 tons of which will be coking coal, mined at Moatize, which is the coal district par excellence in Mozambique.

In Benga, Riversdale Mining expects to produce approximately 1 million tons of coking coal and 180,000 tons of thermal coal.

Based on growth rates in the coal sector, exports are this year expected to post growth of just over 20 percent. (macauhub
