Most Aussies are aware of the reality.

Gillard is wasting our time while the most important players the world do not plan the same.

"In 2009, China's emissions of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels reached 7.5 billion tonnes, a rise of 9 percent on the previous year, according to estimates from the BP oil group. The United States emitted 5.9 billion tonnes.

Under a "baseline" model that assumes China builds on current emissions-reduction policies "consistent with trends in market-based improvement", the nation's emissions are likely to plateau around 2030-35 at about 12 billion tonnes of CO2.

Under a more stringent set of green policies, emissions peak between 2025 and 2030 at about 9.7 billion tonnes of CO2."

Australia in 2008: 437,045,000 @ 1.35% of the total contribution.

    Some loose numbers and observations:

China alone in the very best case scenario (which will not happen IMO) are set to add on to their yearly Co2 production 5 or 6 times the total amount of carbon we produce in a year.

Of that yearly amount we produce we want to tax ourselves to reduce our current production by about 30% or 5% of 2000 levels.

China (using theoretical stringent policies) in the time frame that is being used will add on at least 13 times the annual Co2 amount that we plan to tax ourselves in order to reduce.

    Marvellous stuff.
