It's about the rate of breakage. All batteries weaken over tiem but you want low first cycle loss and more Li+ available to drive further as per the impressive slides.
E.g. would you rather have a tyre that does 20,000Km (like mine) of 50,000 km.
[Of course the garage tried to get me to replace them after 10K. Grrr... ! ]
