It was interesting to watch the new Lucid Car ad which showed the new Lucid sedan driving a further 100 miles after the Tesla stopped out of juice, of course these things are never 100% fair but still Elon would have had his ego nudged. His September Battery Day will look a little flat if he is 100miles behind a new aggressive competitor.
For cobalt it is interesting in that the exclusive supplier of batteries to Lucid is LG Chem who have been a long time backer of COB. In fact LG Chem go to great lengths to promote the fact they use ethical cobalt, even mention Australia as one of its ethical supply countries.
The other very interesting bit for cobalt is that the EV battery supplier to Lucid, LG Chem and Samsung have mostly favoured nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) or nickel cobalt aluminium (NCA) batteries over cobalt-free lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry due to their higher energy density, which allows vehicles to travel longer distances.
