    If the way you've reported it is true, it actually looks like they want to open a short trade, not close it out.

    Ie...they 'borrow' stock which they then 'actually' sell, hoping that when they close out the trade by 'actually' buying the stock back in the market the price they have to pay will be lower than what they sold the borrowed stock for earlier on.
