Im not so sure REE can be easily extracted from fly ash or slag ftom the blast furnace. IMHO, the heat and subsequent oxidation when liberating the hydrogen & carbon is likely to make separation of elements harder, not easier. Pretreatment is probably the way to go, but, the economic demand for the hydrocarbon bond (and coke) would mean that an REE extraction process needs to be fast and easy, neither of which are apparent right now.
