The Jurassic age Surat Basin coals in Qld are actually ideal for CTL as they're what's called perhydrous coals, from a more oil-prone source vegetation matter than the Permian coals that make up most Australian coal production. And the Surat has barely been touched, there are billions of tonnes just sitting there easily mineable.
Unfortunately if it hasn't happened by now it's probably not going to. Crude oil is a cheaper source and I can't even imagine the activist lawfare anyone who attempted it now would encounter. There were several CTL projects trying to get up and running around 2005-2010 and they ran into environmental approval issues even back then that killed the lot of them. It's way worse now, even federal Labor have shown they're happy to intervene kill projects to bolster their woke credentials.
