The Toolebuc Formation, found in the Eromanga and Carpenteria basins, contains a vast amount of shale oil—estimated at 1.7 trillion barrels—but is considered low-grade. The most accessible deposit for open-pit mining is near Julia Creek.

The Queensland Government has placed a moratorium on the McFarlane oil shale deposit due to environmental concerns, particularly its proximity to the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area and the Goorganga Wetlands.
