UCG was part of it but there were also conventional above-ground gasification projects which were much more proven technology and environmentally much less risky. They still got NIMBY'd to death.
I also made some good money trading Linc back in the day, unfortunately it turned out to be a house of cards.
IIRC New Hope had a pilot plant doing GTL with above ground gasification, using these Jurassic coals. I never heard how it performed or whether it's still operating. Anyone know?
