• According to ABARES, half of Australian coal exports go to Japan. Other major customers are South Korea (18.5%), Taiwan (14%) and China (10%).
• Until 2008, China bought 3% or less of Australia’s export coal. This volume leaped to 6% in 2008 and 10% in 2009.
Japan is shifting its reliance of nuclear energy to coal / syn gas/ natural gas.
