As most would be aware, Coles is donating all its profits from last Fridays trading to the bushfire appeal.
Wife & I did our grocery shopping at Coles around 9 pm last Friday. The store in central Bendigo was quite busy for that time of night. All but a couple of the checkouts were open with queues at all of them, but because they were more checkouts open than usual, the wait was not too long....... (And I say this as the worlds most impatient shopper)
Stock was a bit thin on the shelves for some items which is understandable given extra customers, but all in all I think a good shopping experience.
The girl on our checkout said they had been very very busy all day and that the public had really responded to Coles gesture to donate the profits to the fire appeal.
I thought it was a good marketing move by Coles for 2 reasons:
1/ Gave them a good image in the public eye.
2/ Some customers who would normally shop elsewhere would have been there to support the appeal, and hopefully (from WES shareholders point of view) will continue to shop there in future.
So it should be a WIN/WIN situation for Coles and the bushfire appeal.
WES report today mentions the "recovery of coles" had begun in the 6 months to end of DEC 98 and was continuing into the beginning of this year
The friday gesture should also contribute to this ongoing recovery.
I'm not suggesting they are a "buy" right now but WES is one to keep on the radar.
