I think Coles fell so far behind that allot of the gains have been low hanging fruit (ie Customer Service, Look and Feel of Stores etc). The good news is that Coles is finally going forward in a consistent and deliberate manner and Woolies really cant do a whole lot. Perhaps they could have started the discounting; however, I dont think they were too keen to wreck their great margins.
Coles has a long way to go and for Woolies, the supermarket business is humming along and really a wake up call will only do them good and make them hungry again.
