After a demerger the stock price has not "fallen." For example option prices are adjusted to take account the capital change, you have not "lost" $12 from your bull option position because of the demerger, and conversely any bear option position over pre-demerger WES has not gained a windfall $12.The short seller, for example, will now own short positions in both in COL and WES and is no worse off, unless the demerger price for the two shares combined rises.
