collectable cars, a good investment?

I'm a bit of a gold bug but that has not worked well recently. What is clear is that there is a lot of "orphan" [looking for a home] money in the market and that "collectables" including quality diamonds have done well.

I can't afford a gull-wing Merc and most of what I can afford I dismiss as "It was was heap of junk when it was new. Why is it better now?"

There is an old pommy sports car that definitely fits the above description and is up for auction. It is NOT original having been rebuilt from the chassis up but I could ignore my aversion to pommy iron.

It is NOT original and it is clear a chassis could not be rebuilt for the "suggested" price, but does that matter? Does it have REAL collector value?

At the price I could drive it on Sundays, and enjoy it.
