You are wrong wrong & wrong... they require convicts to work on the roads, farms , building and infrastructure when building the first colony in Hobart/ Tasmania. no one was searching for Lithium or Cobalt.
The fact that Hobart has the deepest dock/port in the southern hemisphere is all due to manual labour.. they blo0dy used hands to dug and reclaim the land of sh1tty shallow port which is now around the old dock area and Sullivans Cove.
labourers were also needed to built the many light houses. Check out the one on Tasman Island & cape Tourville - no mean feat. Shining a light in the darkness of the deep oceans.
Just educate yourself already & shine a light,
