... sent on an impossible mission to get the UN to pay for Iraq. Fat chance.

America is restarting its diplomatic push to get international approval for the war on Iraq, with the US Secretary of State Colin Powell arriving in Brussels for a series of talks with European officials.

He will be rushing between 21 different meetings with foreign ministers from Russia, the European Union and NATO.

Despite their disastrous recent experience at the United Nations, the Americans still want a new UN resolution that will provide some sort of endorsement for the war.

Mr Powell openly admits one of the main aims is to secure money for the rebuilding of Iraq that countries will give to the UN and not the US.

But he says he still wants a dominant say for the US in deciding the future of Iraq that is unacceptable to the French the Germans and the Russians.
