A southern Queensland council says it is being forced to try to monitor the massive resources boom in the Surat Basin because it cannot get information from the State Government.

The Dalby Regional Council has land at the centre of a Supreme Court dispute, between two companies which have tenure under separate Queensland acts, including Queensland Gas which wants to extract coal seam gas.

Linc Energy has a pilot underground coal gasification project on the land near Chinchilla.

Dalby Mayor Ray Brown says there is little information available about the potential environmental impact of burning carbon underground.

He says the State Government issued the permits and should be letting the community know what is going on.

"The last thing we want to do is any detriment at all [because] we need to feed the world 20 years from now, 50 years 1,000 years from now, let's make sure everything is okay," he said.

"We can also use the development industry of the underground coal ... for prosperity also."
