the major difference in cost of drilling shallow vs deep is day rate of semi sub vs jackup.
jack ups are good for up to 100m water. semi subs are used for deeper.
jack up (200 - 300k/day)
semisub ~500k / day
ball park figure for semi sub drills are $800k - 1m/day (30 day well if everything goes to plan).
can be half that for jackups.
deepwater is expensive so need a jv / farmin for that. big guys only really operate those semi subs... big move for a junior deepwater. Although i think Hardman was a deepwater at chinguetti, although they had woodside there footing most of the bill.
would be good for woodside to get involved but they are focussing on development.
