Malcolm Turnbull has dumped a key element of his signature energy legislation, admitting he doesn’t have the numbers in parliament, as he tries to fight off a leadership challenge.
In a dramatic about face, the Prime Minister said he couldn’t and wouldn’t go ahead with the current Bill, while a small number of his coalition MPs refused to back the 26 percent emissions reduction target.
“In parliament, where there is a one seat majority, the outstanding reservations of a number of our colleagues, combined with the absence of bi-partisan support mean that as long as that remains the case, we won’t be in a position to take the legislation forward,” Mr Turnbull said.
