PEP is 95% a local, containable issue in political terms.
On a quiet news day, its approval could grab the national news agenda for a few hours but not in the current news environment, there's too much going on for it to have much of a life. It competes with:
- sexual assaults in politics
- Covid vaccine mishaps
- the start of AFL (Go Crows) and rugby.
The PM is not in a weak position as some would have us believe. Prior to the current scandal, ScoMo was enjoying record love
Feb 22, NewsCorp: "Scott Morrison has surged to his highest approval rating since becoming prime minister". A few months prior he was crushing Anthony Albanese as preferred prime minister 53% to 24%.
The assault allegations will bring his popularity back but Labor is now being dragged into the sexual assault crisis - from within their own ranks (see below). It all means that ScoMo stays on top, stronger in the polls than you might think, and the PEP decision will be a one-day news wonder, if that!
