The timing for a pro-PEP 11 announcement could be ripe as early as next week, based on these excerpts from the Financial Review yesterday.

The story in a nutshell:

1. Warning expected within days that Melburnians face gas shortages. This from the Energy Market Operator - so it's credible stuff.
2. A pipeline from WA to the East Coast is on the agenda but even the owners of the pipeline admit it wouldn't be competitive with East Coast supply. In other words, if the government relies on this, the poor buggers in the east will pay MORE for gas. That's hardly a vote winner.
3. Keith Pitt will be able to use the Energy Market Operator's warning to stir up a bit of fear, based on facts. Most people will remember their last energy bill and demand local supply so their power bills don't go up even more.
