At the moment coal power constitutes roughly 90% of the current supply to our major cities, I think that any reduction in the carbon output for this base-load requirement until nuclear or perhaps even solar/wind can generate enough power to satisfy current demand.

The Victorian State Government is well aware of this:

"The Brumby Government knows that we will have to work in a carbon-constrained future and thats why we are taking early action by developing initiatives such as Brown Coal Innovation Australia."

"Brown coal-fired electricity generation provides more than 90 per cent of Victorias energy supply. As we move to tackle climate change it is vital we reduce emissions from brown coal."

A competitor to Exergen in the clean coal space is ASX listed company Environmental Clean Technologies (ESI) who have been granted coal in the Latrobe Valley. They have received various grants from government for testing the new technology which is very similar to that of Exergens.
