Competition in the Australian third generation (3G) mobile telephone market will cut margins. In five years from 2002, nearly $A5 billion will have been spent on three 3G networks. Hutchison Telecommunications launched its in 2003 and, in 2006, has over one million subscribers and about two-thirds of the 3G market. Vodafone has over 220,000 customers. However, analysts believe that the mobile telephone market has entered the retention phase and will reach 100 per cent saturation by the end of 2006 or early 2007.
