While some of us simmer in perpetual euphoria and others welcome the nail biting anticipation of an announcement (I belong to both camps), I’ve been thinking of what commercialization really means for us. How can Weebit Nano execute this phase we’re in effectively and maximize future growth. I was curious why some companies with great products/management fail at this stage of their journey.

I came across this interesting article published in the Harvard Business Review, almost three decades ago (from 1990 pre-tech boom/bust!). Interesting not much has changed when it comes to commercialization of technology and what the best companies do.

    https://hbr.org/1990/05/commercializing-technology-what-the-best-companies-do

We all have great ideas – some of these ideas die with us, some make it a bit further to conceptualization, some fade away after prototypes and others end up changing the world forever (cue technology products by Intel, Apple, Google, Tesla, etc). According to HBR, a company’s “Commercialisation Capability” of a technology can be condensed into four main pillars:

    1. Time to Market

    2. Range of Products

    3. Number of Products

    4. Breadth of Technologies

WBT meets all of these in spectacular fashion

    Time to Market

Being first to market and reducing product development times define this pillar. Coby has mentioned on numerous occasions there is competition, we aren’t the only company developing memory of the future – but we are the first to commercialization with revolutionary technology! Our relationship with Leti has allowed us to save 5-10 years of development time. The standard materials used in our memory means there is no re-tooling of Fabs = faster time to production! Being first to market provides WBT the opportunity to gain market share and achieve volume break points sooner than our lagging competitors. What happens when you’re the only one selling seeds at a vegetation farm? You bet not only are you very popular but can charge a premium i.e. more profits.

First to market also allows for the network effect to play out. One of the things that made APT special… they were first to market and had the most time to build their networks and iterate before competition arrived. HBR discusses the cost of being late to market or slipping timelines can be detrimental. Lucky for WBT timing is impeccable, the industry is ripe for this technology and only we have the solution.

Range of Products, Number of Products and Breadth of Technologies

Why don’t we get a revolutionary technology every odd year? Aside from academic breakthrough required (brilliant minds that do this itself are scarce), the cost of developing technologies is high—and rising. Companies that incur these costs must spread them across as many product and geographic markets as possible.

As Dadi mention, WBT’s silicon memory for the semiconductor and digital age is like oil was for the industrial age. Memory is an input into any semiconductor device/product that stores information and we are targeting all of these products across all geographies!! Don’t take my word for it here’s a direct quote from Coby …. "A $60 billion market, and we address all of it" & "Every electronic device in the world is our target"https://en.globes.co.il/en/article-every-electronic-device-in-the-world-is-our-target-1001347250

We have a number of products in the pipeline, and the breadth of our technology means many of these products build on each other and complement future function. Discrete memory is on the medium horizon, neuromorphic computer long term and now we find out that WBT/Leti have broadened their relation to encompass future IP developments?! What the heck that’s HUGE news. Market fragmentation creates opportunities that allows our Weebit to meet various needs, both large and small market segments which all contribute to this “commercialization” effort. Fabs/ Customers partnering with us today for embedded memory, will potentially look to us in the future and are likely to be a partners for discrete memory and neuromorphic memory too
    .

Many of these points have been mentioned by our excellent community here. It’s worth highlighting it again as we near our inaugural commercial agreement!

Folks, it’s a very exciting time for Weebit Nano. Our future looks very positive. Wish you all a relaxing weekend ahead of what for may be lifechanging news next week. Stay safe.
