Developing this untapped resource would provide a major boost to the state's economy as it recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic. Indeed, the Gippsland gas fields seem to be Victoria's only hope of a rapid recovery from the downturn, given that its tourism and international industries are unlikely to rebound quickly. However, successive Coalition and Labor governments in the state have banned onshore gas development, despite a looming of gas and rising prices.
